The quality of water for drinking was always in doubt and beer was considered
safer. For many years, the very best barley has been grown in Suffolk.
Beer was brewed for domestic use and to supply inns, taverns and ale-houses.
Beer houses may have been given a name and are more difficult to find
in official records.
The Museum has more detailed information on the dates of records of public
houses in the area.
